Supabase raises $200M at $2B valuation fueled by AI boom and 'vibe coding' trend

Supabase, the open-source Firebase alternative, has landed a massive $200 million Series D round at a $2 billion valuation — just seven months after raising $80 million in its Series C. The fast-growing backend-as-a-service platform is gaining steam in the AI developer space, with a product pitch centered on “vibe coding,” or building fast and scaling big.

Developer-first platform gains traction in AI world

Founded in 2020 by CEO Paul Copplestone, Supabase offers a PostgreSQL-based platform with integrated authentication, storage, and vector search features, tailored for AI-era apps. Its popular tagline, “Build in a weekend, scale to millions,”has helped position it as the go-to infrastructure for startups building AI-native applications.

The company says it now has over 1.7 million users and more than 81,000 GitHub stars. Many of its customers are Y Combinator-backed startups, but enterprise clients are beginning to follow.

The round and what’s next

Accel led the $200M Series D, with participation from Coatue, Y Combinator, Craft Ventures, and Felicis. Supabase plans to use the fresh capital to accelerate platform development and double down on growing its developer ecosystem.

“Supabase is the default backend for AI apps now,” one investor noted, citing the company’s vector support and developer-first design.

The company also plans to further differentiate from Firebase by maintaining its open-source ethos and emphasizing data portability — a key concern for businesses building sensitive AI models.

Supabase and the ‘vibe coding’ movement

The success of Supabase is part of a larger shift in developer culture toward tools that offer speed, simplicity, and scale— what’s now being called “vibe coding.” The phrase encapsulates the growing demand for platforms that empower small teams to build full-stack products with minimal overhead.

As AI adoption ramps up, tools like Supabase are becoming essential for developers looking to iterate quickly without managing complex backend infrastructure.
